eye patch, eyes, lazy eyes

H was meant to have had her annual check-up yesterday to update her glasses prescription, an appointment we’d made six months ago. Alas, a week beforehand the hospital cancelled it for reasons I can’t remember.

Fortunately they were able to fit us in with a shorter check up at short notice, but annoyingly it was in the middle of the day. H did the test – with letters now she’s a proper reader. She has done them before, but was only able to identify the letters using phonics. Now school is switching to using the correct names for the letters (as she moves into Y1) and she managed brilliantly.

She’s been switched to the words test now too – which in turn has moved her eye tests to the Opticians rather than to the three-hour long ones which she used to have with a Consultatn. It’s one of those little things I hadn’t realised – now she can read, her eye tests will be far more accurate.

How weird. How good!

The other bonus is having an eye test with the Optician means we don’t have to book six months in advance – we got an appointment for early next week. She may still need eye drops but chances are she won’t. This makes everything so much easier, eye tests can fit around school and that’s a great thing.

She’s also controlling the squint in her eye quite well which is interesting – it’ll be good to find out how her eyes are doing on Monday too and what change her prescription will be. We know she won’t need eye patches again which is always my biggest concern, but I do know she needs new glasses.

But still! Reading and changing eye tests – how brilliant?

lazy eyes

Over a week. Cripes! But there’s a reason – we had our first ever family holiday – just the three of us in a caravan (which was more like a chalet on wheels) at Devon Cliffs near Exmouth, our own private beach (so why when it’s empty does the next family sit so close to us?!) and free Wifi in the big pub and the smaller bar near the beach (I got twitchy, no internet… but limited on my phone) – plus tons for H to do.

Prior to that, H had her eyes tested. I’ll write about it in more depth over at the Adequate Parent but basically, she needs glasses. We’re going shopping for some this afternoon – she’s looking forward to it. I’m dreading them breaking at nursery or something…. it’s not major, but there’s enough of a problem she needs them.

This meant we left later on the Friday, and got to Exmouth for 6pm, got to our chalet place (“little house” said H) and headed to the complex – where there was a Papa John’s which delivers to the chalets! So a quick (ha) play on the Soft Play area, and we headed back to get ready for a busy few days… and that we had. The theme seemed to be trains which suited us all fine. We had rain, but plenty of sun and got to see lots of things.

The biggest eye opener was finding out you can buy holiday homes down there for £10k. We don’t own any property, and we’re quite tempted… it’d guarantee us holidays for the forseeable future too… but it needs more thought for now.

H had a fantastic time. There was so much there geared towards her needs – and it wasn’t all sponsored and in your face – just things she wanted to do. She loved the beach, even if she ran back to me almost in tears after her first paddle “MUMMY I DON’T LIKE IT” sort of stuff. She was generally well behaved (only a handful of tantrums) and only a handful of night terrors… (one at Rachel and Joe’s place).

So now we’re home.

lazy eyes

I’ve noticed (especially as her referral appointment is imminent) that H’s wonky eye seems to be a bit less wonky. I’m hoping it was just something temporary and it’s sorted itself out, but you just don’t know.

It’s over six weeks now since our appointment, and we’ve chased it up once. I watch her a lot now, we sit opposite each other when we eat – although on chatting with my friend Rachel whose boy is profoundly deaf, they were advised to get a circular table which makes a lot of sense as you all face each other and can see each other – something you don’t automatically think about – and it’s something that makes perfect sense.

I hope her eyes are better. I hope it was just a passing thing. Even photos look less cross-eyed these days.

In other news, I’m doing Race For Life this year with Heather and Jule. As decided at around 4pm this afternoon. I’m usually a lot more organised than this… I have also lost at least a stone since the main photo was taken.

lazy eyes, pirates

He thinks she’s just tired. I know it’s not just that.

She had a quick examination, and we’ve been referred… which takes six weeks.

So I’m hoping it fixes itself, or we get referred sooner and quicker.

I’d just got her into the idea she could be a pirate, too (she’d been practising saying “shiver me timbers”), though I guess we still could, she’s already demanded a telescope, hat and a parrot…

lazy eyes

We saw our lovely Health Visitor and sat and chatted. She confirmed what I’ve feared for a few weeks now – H may well have a lazy eye. So we’ll get the doctor sorted for next week. Health Visitors can’t refer the kids any more, it has to be done via the GP these days.

Anyway, H is currently playing in the yard and I’m having five minutes, here’s her stats.

Weight
kg 16.58
lbs – 36.9

Height
99.3cm (a little bit down on last time, she’d be 104cm had she kept up that rate of growth. Phew)

All good, anyway. Now to get her eyes checked out… I’m not too worried – her cousin has the same problem and is doing really well – yes, she may have to wear glasses and an eye patch, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
